Pros And Cons Of Honing Process In Grinding
Honing is the process of grinding workpiece at a low speed during the honing head or workpiece rotation and reciprocating movement by using an expanding mechanism to press a number of oilstone installed on the circumference of the honing head radially towards the hole wall of stee pipe(as shown in the following figure). In order to reduce the influence of different coaxial rotation between the machine tool and the workpiece on the workpiece machining accuracy, the connection between the honing head and the machine tool spindle should be guided by the workpiece hole. In honing process, the overlapping contact points between the whetstone and the hole wall interfere with and trim each other, so that the hole surface presents an intersecting spiral cutting path. This non-repeated trajectory equalizes the opportunity of the interference point, and the roundness and cylindricity of the hole and the whetstone are constantly improved, and the surface roughness value of the hole wall is continuously reduced. The honing process is completed after the required dimensional accuracy is achieved.
What’s The Advantages Of Honing?
Wide processing range.
Honing process is mainly used in the inner surface of steel pipe finishing processing, such as the bore cylindrical, steps, blind hole and cone hole, etc., as well as for plane, sphere and forming surface and cylindrical surface. Honing the aperture of 1 ~ 1200 mm or greater, hole length is 12000 mm. The honing process is suitable for almost all of the workpiece material.
Good surface quality.
After honing, the inner surface of the pipe is cross-shaped, which is good for the storage of lubricating oil and the maintenance of lubricating film. Moreover, the surface of the steel pipe does not produce burns, cracks, deterioration and hard layer because the grinding force and heat of honing is very small, and its speed is a few tenths of the general grinding speed.
High machining accuracy.
When honing the inner hole, the roundness and cylindricity can reach 0.005 ~ 0.01mm, and the surface roughness value Ra can reach 0.05 ~ 0.2m. Its machining efficiency is similar to that of grinding and can replace part of grinding process, but it can't improve the position accuracy.
Low requirement for machine tool precision.
In addition to specialized honing machines, it can also be used on lathes, boring machines, and drilling machines.
In the process of honing, out-of-tolerance of hole size, improper whetstone, too low circular speed and too high reciprocating speed or other reasons can result in out-of-tolerance of hole roundness, size, straightness, rough honing surface, and even scratch. Now, the application of superhard abrasives such as synthetic diamond and cubic boron nitride has greatly advanced honing technology. Honing has been used not only as a final machining process with high precision requirements, but also as an intermediate process for removing large margins. Honing is an efficient and high-quality machining method.
